I have an upright rosenkranz piano. On the inside is a serial number 24222 and underneath that is a plaque that says:
Clavier Etablissement
Josef Saphir
WIEN II

and on the other side of the piano it says Rosenkranz. I believe it is about 100 years old, but am not sure how to tell. It is in great condition. Does anyone have any info about this piano. Thank you.

I recently bought a Ernst Rosenkranz upright piano. It has two brass candelabras on the front, and ivory keys. There is a plaque on the inside of the top that is nailed on. The plaque has the following information:
Ernst Rosenkranz
Pianoforte Fabrik
Gegrundet 1797
Montreal
in Canada
1882
The plaque also has pictures of coins on it and several places and dates around the edge of the paper including Linz 1875, Melborne 1881, Dresden 1875, Dresden 1840 and Sydnay 1880.

Your piano sounds lovely. The "coins" are probably awards that the maker received at various shows in the cities mentioned. For instance "Linz 1875" would indicate that it received the award or medal (think blue ribbon at the state fair) for a show held in Linz, Austria in the year 1875. The plaque also tells you that the company was founded in 1797 and apparently your instrument was built and/or sold in Montreal Canada in 1882. It was usual for Canadian and American makers to attend European shows seeking awards and new customers, but Rosenkranz was unusual in exploring the Australian market (Sydney and Melbourne) also.
