You sorta hit the nail on the head! The English Silver Company was a mid 20th century company in Brooklyn, N Y. The silver plated tray would not be expensive...depending on the condition of the plate. In our section of the country this type tray would sell for about $20 - $30...depending on condition.

Thanks for writing us tho

I have a decorative serving tray measuring 15"W x 20 1/2"L plus an additional 6"L total for handles. There are grape clusters along the edges. The base of the tray has a paisley engraving. The back of the tray reads "English Silver Co." There are 2 tiny engraved sea monster looking creatures on either side of an engraving saying "Silver on Copper". Excellent condition. Is this worth anything or is it just a $20 tray? Thanks!

It does not cost to ask questions on the forum, however it is difficult to answer some questions without seeing the item. We do not appraise items here however!

Your tray really would have to be seen to identify it. It would be silver plate from your description, however the mark would have to be seen. The lion has been associated with England for centuries. It has become at least part of the mark for several silver companies both in England and USA. You could find an appraiser near you who would identify it .. vist our web site www.1sa-appraisers.org under Search for an Appraiser.

Thanks for writing us

HI, I have a large old tray marked silver on copper with the lion rampant above. No other markings. Very very heavy, hand engraved on serving part, large handles. Rim is un decorated. Haven't been able to find this mark anywhere, but I feel it is of the 1800's.
Thankyou, barb

Hello I inherited 2 roaring tiger paintings. They are siberian tigers hand painted on brown silk. They have an artists mark on them but i have been unable to get an identifiable name from anyone. They could be chinese, Japanese or korean. My family purchased these in korea during the Korean war. They are mounted in wooden frames with glass protecting the silk. The back of the frames have a paper coating to prevent you from opening the frame. There is a wire to hang the frame and the frame is light wood and has been nailed together. the 2 tigers face each other on the wall and are roaring. there are subtle differences between them as they are hand painted and not reproductions. I have tried to find something remotely similar to them anywhere and have came across nothing even close. Where the artist name is in characters it is in gold and there is a gold mountain behind the letters as well. This is the same for both paintings. Any ideas to send me in the right directions would be appreciated to find the value of these pieces.
Thanks

How do you go about identifying stuff that may not have a marking, but may be old, as in 50 yrs old or more? Thanks for helping me get started.

Cindy

Most of the times it is not possible to accurately identify an item unless an appraiser sees it, feels it, and looks for identifying features. You can put a full description on this forum and we may be able to help you identify it. It is also possible to post a picture if you have one in JPeg format. The code to use for posting an image is listed to the left under FORMATTING. If you need help doing this, let me know!

Unfortunately things are not always valuable just because they are old....and 50 years isn't very old! Markings are just one of the things we look for. There are a lot of "false" markings on items today.

If you need professional help in identification you can go to our data base at the left [SEARCH FOR AN APPRAISER] . This will let you find someone in your city or area.

Give us some more information. We may be able to assist you.

Thank-you so much for the quick response to my question. I just have a lot of stuff to sell. And some of it I could not even begin to identify. And some I have good markings on it, but can not find one online that is similar. I will put some on soon and ask some questions. I can learn alot from this. I appreciate it alot. Thank-you. Have a good day. Cindy
