That serial number indicates it was made by Kelso in 1901. Value of any item depends on what someone will pay for it. These old pianos have very little value these days

The Richardson and company piano serial number is 17517
Teacher
Your Richardson was made early 20th century by Kelso Piano Company in business during that period. The date could be determined by the serial number of the instrument. The number is usually located on the sound board. I could give you the date if I had the number, or there are several web sites that will do the same.
Many times if a famous pianist bought a piano from a company, the company would mark ALL their pianos with that name as an advertising feature. There would be no way we could tell what refurbishing your piano would require. You need to cann al good piano technician in your area.

Can any one help me?
I inherited a piano. It is an antique vertical piano. I am looking for information on it and do not know where to start. This is what it has inscribed on the underside of the key lid.
Richardson & company
made for the Ambuhl Brothers 1919
Pittsburgh, Pa
from what I can tell through some research, the Ambuhl brothers were polka composers in pittsburgh, their most famous works were published in 1912ish.
The only company coming up is Richardson furniture stores. There was a Richardson that took over controlling interest in Weber pianos in the 1920's.
I would really like to know the history of this piano. i am interested in restoring it. The soundboard/harp are original and in excellant condition, it needs new felts (they are original) and it has not been tuned for at least 45 years.
Any suggestions on its restoration or how to find out its history?
Dear sdondle
You really need to contact one of our appraisers near you to look at your piano. It would be difficult to tell much about it from your description. The serial number would have to be checked as well as case, condition, etc. The name you mentioned might be a piano retailer, not a maker. It is not listed in the Pierce Piano Atlas of piano makers.
Go to
http://www.isa-appraisers.org/ISA_form.html
and type in your city or state and look for an appraiser near you.
Thanks for contacting ISA

You need to find the name and serial number on the frame inside the piano. The printing just refers to "services of Madaille 1873...and in Vienna. It would be necessary to have more information. Have you tried a local piano dealer?

I found a wonderful site by typing in "Piano blue book" into google. Actually I was looking for organ information. Robert Gellerman's data base was teriffic. I was looking for infomation ... So of course that did not take into consideration condition. Sometimes I get a local piano store owner (expert)to look at a piano for me. http://sponsor.globalknowledge.nl/gellerman/DBPictures

I've seen Gellermans site...and its is very good, especially in grading pianos. The Pierce Piano Atlas I think has the best information and dating method. The problem with any on-line appraisal is market! Most uprights, square grands, and even some grands are hard to sell in mordern homes without space and with a desire for "electronics."
Not many can beat my Baldwin 6'2!!! Beautiful tone and wonderful touch.
