By Sheree Randolph on Sunday, November 25, 2007 - 02:26 pm:

I purchased a Jacobus Stainer Absam prope Oenipontum 1645 violin at a rural auction. During my research, I notice that alot of people seem to have what I have. This violin has been used quite a bit and has a Wurlizer bridge, which I assume to be a replacement. The printing appears to be stamped on the inside; is done in indigo colored ink, the 45 appears to be hand written. I need to get it appraised, I want to insure it. The coffin shaped case is from the 1800's. The largest city in my area is Chicago.

I recently purchased a Mathias Thoma violin for resale and am wondering about it's value. It's not one of the ones like they make now in Romania. This one was made in 1972 in West Germany. Any info would be great! -Hannah

Hi, I recently acquired a Jacobus Stainer violin. Now, my great uncle makes violins for different symphonies, and has for years...and it looked at it and told me that it was authenic. It was made in 1665, a real Jacobus Stainer. How much would this be worth, and who or where could I sell it to?

If you would click Search For An Appraiser at the left, you can check our national database for music specialist close to your area. I also would strongly recommend Fred Oster, Vintage Instruments, in Philadelphia. You can contact him at 215 545-1100 or Osterviolins@aol.com. I'm sure any of those appraisers would be glad to inspect your instrument.

I can read your Spanish, however I am not skilled enough to answer you in Spanish!

An expert would have to examine your violin to accurately determine its value, however I feel sure that this is a violin sold by Sear Roebuck. They made several models with lables like Stradivarius, Maggini, Amati, Guarnerius etc. Their 1902 catalogue lists two Stainer models, one for $5.65 and one for $12.95. These are identified by the paper label inside. The present value today depends on condition. Usually they are in the $50.00 to $100.00 range.

If you wish to have it examined, go to our website (isa-appraisers.com) and follow the links to "Find an Appraiser"

Thank you for writing ISA

I have a violin of given to me by my grandmother
she knows that is was her fathers and possible her grandfathers.

The label inside reads:
Joannes Baptifta Guadagnini
Cremonenfis Fecit Taurini
alumnus Antoni Stradivari 1720

(cross with GBG T)

note: where you would assume the letter to be "s"
it looks like an "f" or something like it. Also, the 20 of 1720 is handwritten

The case the violin is in has a date on it of
July 1888

If you could give me any information regarding this instrument it would be truly appreciated.

Eric

It would be nice if you had a Guadagnini or Strad. I noticed where a Strad was auctioned last week for about $1.5 mil! Probably all of these violins are accounted for. They rarely come up for sale.

I feel 99.9% sure that you have one of the violins made for sale by Sears Roebuck. These had paper labels...original works were not marked with paper labels. The 1902 Sears catalog list several models from Stradivarius, Maggini, Amati, Guarnerius to Lowendall. The prices then ranged from $2.45 to $19.95. Their best Strad sold for $6.95. Unfortunately now most of these usually sell in the $100.00 range instead of $1,000,000.00!!!

If you need an appraiser to look at your violin to be completely sure, you may wish to visit our website (www.isa-appraisers.org) and click on "Find an Appraiser". This will assist you in finding someone near you that could examine it for you.

Thanks for contacting ISA
